Don’t distort facts about alcohol ban’s ineffectiveness
The National, Wednesday February 18th, 2015
NICK Tolpe’s stance on the alcohol ban in SHP to stay cannot go unchallenged.
I do not have facts to support the ban being politically motivated, but for the ban being ineffective, yes.
Has he been to Tente (the tuckerbox near the field), Wara Magani (where a certain club operates a disco and sells alcohol in Mendi), Magani Market (where youths openly sell liquor), or that other tucker shop near Dust Mangi’s fuel depot?
These are signs of the ineffectiveness of the ban – the public selling and consuming alcohol.
Even the police know of it and yet, they do nothing.
There has even been talk of police officers taking bribes to turn a blind eye.
I have been in the province as it is my home and I go whenever I can.
Of course there are tribal fights and other law and order problems, but they were there even before the ban; some of them were not even alcohol-related.
I have no personal grudges against Tolpe.
What I do not condone is political point scoring and distorting the facts.
