Don Bosco to provide for refugee students

Education

DON Bosco Technical School (DBTS) in Gabutu, Port Moresby, will provide free uniforms, boots and stationery for 20 West Papuan refugee students awarded scholarships.
The school met with the students and their parents and guardians on Saturday at the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of PNG and the Solomon Islands (CBC PNGSI) to inform the students what the school would provide for them in the scholarship.
The recipients were the first to benefit from the scholarship which was officially launched at a seminar last month at CBC PNGSI office in Gordon.
The scholarship allows the students to attend short courses (four months) giving them the opportunity to complete and attain a basic certificate in computing, administration, electronics and motor mechanics at DBTS.
Apart from the uniforms, boots and stationery, the school also provides transport for pickup and drop-off at the Manu bus stop, from Monday to Friday for students at a 50 toea fare.
The 20 students signed the statement on completion of the course and also appointed two students, Arnold Omba and Anamina Bonggoibo, to be their representatives who report to the school.
West Papuan leader Eliaser Wainggai said the programme was very positive and hoped for it to continue.
Another leader, Olaf Wayangkauw, said there were some West Papuan youth who are not able to read and write and were facing difficulties with academic opportunities.
He appealed to the CBC PNGSI and the Caritas PNG to help with the literacy programme for their children and youths.
