THE blood bank at the Port Moresby General Hospital has been given a boost by donors from corporate bodies in Port Moresby.
The corporate blood drive began in 2012.
Last year it collected 364 bags containing more than 160 litres of blood.
It plans to collect more this year.
Hospital chief executive officer Grant Muddle said there were many hospitals in dire need of blood for major surgeries.
Blood donations would greatly help save lives, he saiud.
He said blood collected in Port Moresby would be sent to other hospitals.
Muddle thanked the organisations for saving lives and encouraged them to promote healthy lifestyles in the workplace.
“Diabetes and heart attacks are becoming too common among the working class therefore I encourage you to have a healthy working lifestyle,” he said.
Corporate organisations were given various awards for donating blood over a four-week period.
KPMG won the “your blood’s worth bottling” award with 29 per cent of its staff donating blood.
The automotive industry prize was awarded to Boroko Motors, while Airlines PNG took out the airline award and the banking industry prize was awarded to ANZ.
