A NEW drama series to be produced in Port Moresby aims to build a fresh generation of screen and broadcast storytellers to create television by and for Papua New Guineans.

On Thursday, ABC International will launch the teaser for Central Giant. It is a compelling television series that aims to entertain, while exploring some of the most relevant and important issues facing Papua New Guinea today – drugs, HIV, violence, love, friendship and rugby league.

Head of the ABC International’s Pacific and Mekong branch Domenic Friguglietti said: “ABC International is delighted to be supporting the development of this innovative and groundbreaking series.

“We are committed to working in partnership with the media sector in PNG to deliver informative and entertaining content that is tailored to suit local audiences.

“Drama is a great way to deliver entertaining content while offering an opportunity to focus on some of key issues challenging PNG today.”

The show tells the story of the Central Giants, an ethnically diverse Port Moresby-based rugby league team fighting their way through a competition season in spite of health scares, internal rivalries and love affairs that all threaten to derail the team’s effort.  Over a dozen local film talents honed their crafts as actors and crew through the making of the teaser.  With further funding, the show aims to provide continued mentoring opportunities for local filmmakers to build their skills.
