DREIKIKIR High School in East Sepik plans to re-introduce rice farming this year.
Rice farming was introduced last year but was not fully implemented, teacher-in-charge of the agriculture project Robin Lep said.
He said more than 900 square metres of land were used last year to plant rice seedlings and the area would against be cultivated.
Lep said they had harvested five stock bags of rice grains.
Some of the rice seedlings will be given to students to take home, while others will be planted in the school’s garden.
He said besides rice farming they were planning to plant Chinese Cabbages, peanuts, lettuce, tomatoes and onions.
Lep said the school administration had approved the introduction of poultry and pig farming as well.
“We initiated the poultry project last year and the outcome was very good,” he said.
“This year we will again start the poultry project as well as a piggery.”
He said they would sell some of
the crops and supply the school
kitchen.
Rice farming for this year is expected to start by the end of next month.
