Drive for more women in horticulture

National, Normal

WOMEN in the agriculture unit under the Morobe Agriculture Division has initiated an awareness project to encourage women in Morobe province to engage in floriculture as an income earning activity.
Last month, the unit started a base line data survey on the number of women involved in flower cultivation and the type of flowers cultivated.
The first survey was conducted at Chevasing, Nasuampum and Bubia in the Huon Gulf.
The survey was planned to cover Lae, Markham, and Bulolo this year and rest of the outer districts next year.
This will enable the unit to properly organise the women into groups depending on their flowers so that they can sell.
Rice project officer and coordinator of the survey Margaret Titus said the target of the project was to organise women to grow flowers that were currently on demand in the market.
