Drivers’ ignorance blamed for accidents along highway

MORE accidents on the Port Moresby-Gulf highway this year have been put to driver ignorance, according to a senior police officer.
Gulf police commander Senior Inspector Silva Sika told The National that one or two accidents a month would see people dying and major head injuries suffered.
Sika said many accidents happened because of carelessness by drivers and ignorance of traffic laws on the road.
“No one should give an excuse for bad road accidents caused by carelessness,” he said.
“It’s the personal responsibility of every driver and pedestrian to be safe, to be mindful of dangers that might happen on the road.”
Police have started their pre-Christmas and New Year awareness in Port Moresby, basically conducting roadblocks along roads and the highway to search vehicles, illegal unlicensed drivers, passengers drinking and overloading. The same applies to people travelling by sea.
