POLICE are urging drivers to be cautious when driving on Poreporena Freeway in Port Moresby.
National Capital District Met Supt Perou N’dranou said three men were fortunate to survive a motor vehicle accident there on Tuesday afternoon.
Met Supt N’dranou said a particular sharp bend near the Konedobu roundabout where the accident occurred was becoming notorious for such accidents and fatalities involving bigger trucks.
He appealed to motorists, especially people driving big cargo trucks, to take precaution when approaching the bend.
Police said the three men narrowly escaped death when a huge truck hurtling down the freeway and overturned.
The driver of the truck was thrown out onto the road from the impact.
Police said the driver of a Toyota LandCruiser VX also escaped death when a twisted metal pole that fell from the overturned truck, struck the roof of the car and penetrated the driver’s seat, just missing him.
A police officer at the scene said the truck spilled gravel onto the freeway and the truck driver was ejected from the cabin, but he survived.
NCD police traffic units, members of the Fox unit and water police cordoned off the crash site while St John Ambulance staff and workers moved the wounded on stretchers into ambulances and took them to the hospital.
