PAPUA New Guinea Sevens representative Douglas Guise will lead the New Ireland Drongos in the National Provincial Championships at Monier Rugby Park in Port Moresby this weekend.

The experienced campaigner last led his countrymen to victory 10 years ago when they claimed the then MRDC National Sevens in Port Moresby.

The New Irelander maybe a touch slower now but still has the guile and poise to lead a raw side.

A man of few words, Guise said his side was aiming to shock and surprise, not just make up numbers.

“We are not here to make the numbers is all I can say,” Guise said. Other experienced hand includes former Pukpuk loose forward Eremas Simba.

The Drongos will join 13 centres in this weekend’s action-filled 16-team tournament.

Guise said the local competition along the Buluminsky Highway had been on for several seasons and the Malangan Barbarians Sevens had shown that sevens in New Ireland was alive and well.

The coach is former Pukpuk Ralph Pombie and John Shallom is the team manager.

The New Ireland Drongos: Douglas Guise, Gabby Mora, Mark Kuma (Munawai), Orim Siri (Lakuramau), Connie Ben (Lemakot), Murou Rebon, Andrew Samson, Mete Faite (Ngavalus), Walter Sani (Tandis), Eremas Simba, Charles Niggins (Madina), Lingut Arthur (Lugagun), Junior Tabutabu (Mangai).
