Drop in standard of English

I agree with the findings of “Report-

ed speech in PNG” as discussed in Column1 (April 4).

The National’s English language

is much better than the other papers and media organisations in PNG.

I struggle to purchase other dailies except on Mondays and Fridays because of my disenfranchisement with the deterioration in English.

In recent times, I noticed tabloid style headlines creep into The National.

It is not up to the usual standard that I have come to expect.

It is my view that the declining standard of English in PNG owes largely to

the advent of social media.

We traded books for unedited blogs, Facebook messages and tweets.

If we want people to speak good English language, we do not need a restructure at UPNG or in our curriculum.

We just have to read great books again.
