THE rugged terrain of Chimbu is one of the main obstacles in the fight to eradicate drug and homebrew production and consumption in the province, according to police.
Commander of Chimbu police special operation Senior Const Yatefa Welis revealed this after walking for more than one hour to Dom area of Gumine district to uproot 261 mature marijuana plants in Imiltop and Kwindilma villages last Wednesday.
“Our operation to remove drugs and homebrew in many parts of the province has been hampered by the rugged terrain. Despite these obstacles, we are doing our best, eventually we will get to some of these difficult places,” Welis said. He said they followed a reliable tip-off and walked to the Dikpe mountains and to Imiltop and Kwindilma villages to uproot the marijuana.
Chimbu provincial police commander Supt  Albert Beli commended Welis and members of the special operation for braving the odds to do “an excellent job.” Beli said the special operation team under the strong leadership and coordination of Welis travelled to the western end of mount Dikpe, walked for an hour and uprooted the plants. Beli said many men thought marijuana cultivation was a way to make a living but were not aware of the destruction it caused.
“The herbal plant is destroying the future generation. The Government must review and amend the drug laws quickly before the future generation is destroyed,” he said.
