 THE country is in its second month of the dry season and fewer rainfall days are expected, National Weather Service director Kasis Inape says.

“The forecast for July is that all locations in the country will receive below normal rainfall,” he said.

“Some places will have rainfall but the number of the rain days will be reduced.”

Inape said that during the dry season, the New Guinea Islands region would experience cooler days and cooler nights.

“Mamose region will experience cooler days and warmer nights and the Highlands can expect normal conditions,” he said.

“Southern region will experience warmer days and cooler nights.

“For Port Moresby, this month is the driest. It can expect a maximum of 20mm.”

Inape said the rainfall on Monday in Port Moresby was about 3mm.

“The rain was the effect of the sea cooling during the night time. The air from the sea moved to the land forming clouds which resulted in the rainfall.”

Inape said Port Moresby can expect an average maximum temperature of 29.9 degrees Celcius during the day and an average minimum temperature of 22.3 degrees during the night.

“The condition we are experiencing is just the effect of the normal dry season,” he said.

“It will get much drier with the beginning of El Nino next month.”

Inape advised the  public in Port Moresby during the period to:

  • Refrain from burning bushes;
  • Start storing water;
  • Refrain from gardening on the hillsides;
  • Grow short-maturing crops and vegetables; and,
  • Drink plenty of water
