Dumping cans on roads illegal, police say

THE dumping of empty cans on public roads is illegal, according to police.
Insp Joseph Salle of the Boroko Traffic Police said littering on public roads was dangerous and could cause road accidents.
He said this during an awareness on road safety in Erima, Port Moresby.
“City roads have become a ground for people to dump rubbish and empty cans that pose risks to the public,” he said.
“People placing empty cans on the roads for vehicles to run over can be arrested and charge for littering and causing risks to road users.”
Gordon police reservist Enoch Paiko said they would conduct more awareness to stop littering on roads.
Security guard Henry Pokoraija said they were engaged by the National Capital
District Commission (NCDC) to look after the overall cleanness and safety of the fly-over bridge.
“Now you can see the place is clean and safe,” he said.

  • Such laziness!! Unemployed people are the ones doing this. Goodness all that time procrastinating and they don’t have the muscle to crush a couple of cans by hand. That’s just shear laziness. This laziness CAN cause accidents, not COULD as stated in the article. Most drivers think about the safety and wellbeing of their tyres and try to avoid this nonsense on the roads. In doing so poses the risk of colliding with oncoming traffic as well as by standers etc…

  • Please come to East Boroko market and do the awareness. We are sick and tired of people wanting their empty cans to be smashed by vehicles. They damage our tyres and it cost money to repair. They do cause accidents when the tyres get busted because of can tins on the road.

  • Goroka is even worse. Traffic officers in Goroka should really deal with those idiots doing the same thing here in the District in towns and highway especially.

  • it all comes to ignorance, police are ignorant of what people are doing, they say it is against the law but how long has this been going on in front of their eyes or when did it became a law, just yesterday. Enforce the law if police think that it is a law and people are violating it rather than being ignorant as is normally the case with our policeman and woman. do they have the passion and desire to become a police officer or they only enlisted cause they cant find a job.

  • Police! if there I a law, then enforce it. Don’t just talk about and get your picture take with you cheap sun glasses.
Have you tried braking when you are on the cans? Ever heard of loose gravel, well this is 10 time worse.

  • The very law enforcing Officers of the Police like Road traffic Officers and Highway Patrols are very slack in policing small issues like this one. If you travel along the Okuk Highway every stones and any dangerous objects are placed right on the road and Police have done nothing to remove or question the offender.

  • Honestly, just a big show off with cheapest dark glasses telling the general public they are hard at work. Do something about it.
