Duo arrested for having unlicensed pistol

HELA police commander Martin Lakari says two male suspects were arrested on Tuesday on the Nanonda Highway near Tari town for allegedly having in their possession an unlicensed pistol and ammunitions.
He told The National yesterday that the two were detained at the Tari police cell and would be charged.
Lakari said the suspects were allegedly caught by the MS (mobile squad) 11 called in from Wabag in Enga to assist police operations in Tari to bring lawlessness under control.
“They (suspects) were caught by the MS11 who had been conducting roadblocks at Nanonda and their bail has been refused,” Lakari said.
He said the pistol confiscated had the serial number 1911A2.
“There have been a lot of other weapons confiscated , including bush knives and axes.”
A similar pistol to the one confiscated this week was ceased earlier.
He said Tari was quiet with no reports of retaliatory attacks when the joint security forces operation started this week after five people were killed in tribal fight last week.
Hela Governor Philip Undialu said the provincial government would be working with the police to introduce a police hotline so people could ring in to report crimes, trouble, warlords and people in possession of
illegal firearms and other weapons.
Undialu urged the people and Hela leaders to work with police.
