MADANG football supporters threatened to burn the Morobe provincial flag, swore and even threatened to kill Morobe players and supporters last Saturday in Madang during National Soccer League’s Northern Conference clash between the Lae City Dwellers and Madang, says City manager Peter Seske.

Seske claimed Madang governor Jim Kas, Siegfried Beschel (a business man) and about 10 police men were at Laiwaden soccer field when the incident occurred but did nothing.  “As a long time soccer follower in Morobe, I can describe Madang leaders as still in the dark ages with their mindsets because they failed to manage and calm down rowdy youths,” Seske said.

“In the first 20 minutes of the opening half, a young boy from the crowd swore at our striker Nigel Dabinyaba (Yu kaikai k** blo mama blo yu) that shocked Dabinyaba.

“The misbehaving Madang supporters ran onto the field, threw stones, punched our players and threatened to kill them and our supporters when Madang scored their second goal,” Seske added.

“Two of Madang supporters ran towards City supporter Judith Gunemba, who was waving a Morobe flag and cheering for Lae, and threatened to take the flag and burn it on the field.

“Most of these Madang fans were drunk and rowdy youth who threatened the Lae players and verbally abused them.”

Seske said the report by The National yesterday was misleading and biased.

He said Madang did not win the game through their ability but because of intimidation by the crowd.

Attempts to contact Governor Kas, Beschel and Madang police were unsuccessful.

A Madang supporter, who did not want to be named, confirmed Seske’s claim saying it was done as payback for last year’s 4-1 NSL grand final loss to the Dwellers in Lae.
