PROVINCIAL governors, administrators and local level government ward councillors have been urged to take the lead in implementing the national electronic ID card system (e-ID card) system.

Project director of the national (e-ID card) and deputy national statistician Roko Koloma told an implementation workshop in Wewak, East Sepik, last Friday that they must work within the time frame given.

“With the timeframe given, we must deliver this system in the framework as set by the National Planning Minister.

“This system is for the provincial administrators to use the information to plan for districts and rural centres,” Koloma said.

The workshop was opened by Wewak district administrator Fred Likia who highlighted the need to decentralise the information data for all wards to access the information when planning projects in the province.

Speakers at the workshop included Casper Ontari from the Department of National Planning, Kenny Lesa from Implementation and Rural Development and Labour Department officials and representatives from project partner Huaweii Technologies of China.

Koloma urged churches, NGOs, the business community and villages to take ownership of the new identity card system by registering and explaining the many benefits it will bring to the rural communities.

“What we are looking at are important key impact projects, and the five years to deliver the government’s plan. I have to report to the National Planning Minister monthly for funding,” Koloma said.

He emphasised the importance of the secured identification system and the deployment of technology through Huawei Technologies.

The e-ID card team is currently in the highlands centres of Mendi, Tari, Wabag, Kundiawa before travelling to Manus and New Ireland.
