Eagles’ first win

BROWN Eagles registered their first competition points after defeating Kopex 7-4 in the Port Moresby men’s A Grade competition yesterday.
Led by David Maira, ToAlbert brothers Martin and Emmanuel, Paul Tabete and Belo Taule, the boys from Matupit Island never looked back from the opening innings.
Nothing must be taken away from Kopex led by veteran Stanley Tavul, who did everything by leading his charges in batting and fielding.
Tavul collected one point to his name but it was not enough to bail his team out of troubled waters.
In the opening match, Mantarays who lost their game on technical grounds to Gazelle last week, bounced back to thrash Samurai 7-1 in the breakfast game while PNG Power maintained their position on top with a good 5-1 win over a luckless Dolphins.
United Brothers scored a hefty 11 runs to AB Bears 4 following the collapse in fielding in the last two innings.
United wasted no time in scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning through short-stop Jolam Jerry, second base Adrian Chan and left out-fielder Jacob Niggins after Bears fail to score a run.
In the top of the second inning, pitcher Gesyn Chee made a good hit to the outfield to bring home Tul Malisa and Sunjil Malisa to narrow the score 3-2
In the bottom of the second inning, United added another two runs with Kaumu Vailala and Jolam Jerry extending the score to 5-2.
The scoreline remained unchanged in the third inning.
However, there was a turn in the fourth inning that saw United who easily collecting six points through mis-throws compounded with in-field errors by Bears.
Despite Tul Malisa and Brian Lesley narrowing the score 5-4, United ensured pitcher Samuel Ropa romped home to extend the lead by one point (6-5).
Outfielder Vailala came home to strengthen the lead 7-5 before a full-base  which saw Dick Bart Jr, Junior Maira, Xavier Knox and Tony Martin storm home to seal the match for Brothers.
The result of the Gazelle and Defence match was not available.
The unofficial ladder after yesterday games has PNG Power on 9 points followed by Brothers 8, Dolphins 6, Samurai 6, Defence 6, Kopex 4, Bears 2, Mantarays 3, Gazelle 2 and Brown Eagles 2.
