Eagles outclass Defence in softball final

THE Brown Eagles proved their dominance of the Port Moresby softball competition with a 10-0 thrashing of Defence in the grand final at the Bisini diamonds on Saturday.
The high-flying Eagles claimed their second championship in a row under coach Julius Uvia, who had to keep his young side focused on the main prize after a fairytale premiership win last season.
The Eagles did not have it all their own way over the regular season but made the finals and scrapped into the season decider after surviving the elimination final to defend the crown.
Uvia said the most pleasing aspect of the win was keeping the opposition scoreless – the first in a men’s final.
Things looked ominous for Defence as their pitcher and catcher combination of Mosley Obed and Lepan Maradi could do little to restrict Eagles batting led by Consie Lumaris, Pedro Kulukul and Tyson Paivu saw them open up a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
The next two innings were scoreless as both sides warmed to the task but the Eagles grabbed their chances in the fourth to add a run to increase the lead to 4-0.
At the bottom of the fifth inning, Lumaris, Manu ToAlbert, Kolish Pagel, Pedro Kulukul, Graham Kinavai and Bernard Albert all crossed the home plate as the Eagles dominated play.
Defence tried to get runners on bases in the sixth and break the egg but were denied by some great fielding by Eagles sharp in-fielding.
