THE Wantok Gaming System (WGS) Mt Hagen Eagles will announce their 25-man squad this weekend to compete in this year’s Digicel Cup rugby league challenge.
The squad will be announced soon after the finals of the Colour competition sponsored by United Engineering Consultant and Contractors Pacific Ltd (UECCP). The competition will end on Sunday.
This was announced by Eagles board member and former Kumul Max Tiri.
The announcement was made at the Rebiamul oval in Mt Hagen on Tuesday during the presentation of K20,000 by UECCP managing director Joseph Teng to the Colour competition.
Tiri said the WGS had committed to the Eagles until 2014.
He said the squad would play Goroka Lahanis in a trial match in Mt Hagen this month.
Eagles team manager Joel Buri and Mt Hagen Rugby Reague president Eli Opa were also present to witness the presentation.
Tiri said through the support from UECCP, Hagen Eagles would now have a strong side to compete with other franchises.
He said up to 100 players were playing in the competition made up of four teams – Red, Blue, Green and Yellow.
Tiri said through this competition, selectors were able to pick the best side.
Tiri said rugby league was a tough sport to administer and he needed support and cooperation from everyone.
He said the team would need funds and resources to compete this year and he was grateful to UECCP for coming forward to support the sport in the province and backing competitions that provided the Eagles with their players.
