EARLY learning is crucial in laying a firm foundation for success in life.
So the people
of Kama village along the Bihute Road in Goroka, Eastern Highlands, founded an early learning school this year.
School administrator Kumani Aviro said successful people always had a good start in
early childhood schooling.
That was why he took the lead to help the people of Kama in establishing the Goroka Early Learning School for children as young as two-and-a-half to six years old.
Aviro said they started on Feb 6 with a play school and preparatory classes for level one and two.
“The school is part
of promoting the government’s new Lukautim Pikinini Act
to lay strong foundation in children so
when they grow up, they will be able to make
good decisions and
find success in life,” he said.
The school has a clinic, a small library, toys section, shower and latrines, teacher’s administration rooms and classrooms.
“We only encourage English to be spoken
in the school and
promote health and good hygiene,” Aviro said.
Three teachers were hired and assisted by two aids.
There are plans underway for the school administration to negotiate with the University of Goroka to have students studying for diploma in early childhood to come to the school for practical experience.
The students will be teaching on a weekly basis.
The school’s only income comes from the small fees parents
pay.
Aviro even digs into his own pockets to supplement the school’s needs.
The school, which is the first of its kind to be founded in Goroka, needs immediate financial help.
