Earthquake rocks Islands region and Solomons

 A DAWN earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter Scale shook parts of the New Guinea Islands region yesterday.

The Geophysical Observatory said the quake occurred at a depth of 379km at 4.35am.

Tremors were felt 110km east-north east of Taron, New Ireland, 185 east-north east of Kokopo, 311 km north-west of Arawa, in Bougainville, 374 km east-south east of Kavieng in New Ireland and 904 km north west of Honiara, the Solomons.

The earthquake was deep and the effects would have been minimal in the NGI region.

No damage was reported from the region.

The observatory said there was no possibility of a tsunami based on earthquake and historical tsunami data.
