LAE metropolitan police are concerned about the theft of easipay power meter boxes in Lae city.
Met Supt Chief Insp Chris Kunyanban said it had become a problem, thieves went around stealing the meters from premises.
The latest one was at the PNG University of Technology where 40 power boxes were stolen over the last two weeks.
“I am appealing to PNG Power if they can employ some mechanism in such a way that people could not steal this thing and reuse it elsewhere,” Chief Insp Kunyanban said.
He said he had written to the PNG Power manager in Lae seeking his assistance in the matter to find ways into tackling the problem.
“The urgency for positive approaches to this issue is very important as if we do not have protective measures in place to safeguard this thing, people will go ahead in stealing them from buildings.”
Chief Insp Kunyanban said police received reports that easipay power meters were stolen from various other locations in the city.
He said the total value of those meters stolen from Unitech was almost K60,000.
In updating the 31 detainees who escaped from Lae Central Police Station watch house (police cell) on Sept 1, he said police investigations were completed.
“The file is now with the crime investigation division and we want to make sure that the file has good evidences and if this file can be used against the cell guard for aiding the escape.”
Chief Insp Kunyanban said police would consult the Office of the Public Prosecutor before pressing charges against the cell guard that was implicated in the escape.
He said the majority of those who escaped were still at large.
Chief Insp Kunyanban said one was killed and five others were captured.

  • What hapeen to the socalled uniforce private security that employed by unitech to safeguard the premises and the campus????are they sleeping all those years???investigate their supervisor and the manager or else sack the entire uniforce and engaged the private security firm….

  • This is an inside Job….the mechanism to prevent such stealing is for the meter boxes to be placed inside the houses…

  • We never had of this, our Uniforce are the best guards we have, they work 24/7 maybe the issue might happen outside the school campus.

Traim kam lo UOT na stealim wanla liklik samtin, laik shirt or trausis na u ba feelim hand blo Uniforce na ol sumatin na u ba tin why u born

  • Those are trained electricians going around stealing from their former employee. Probably they are entering unoccupied buildings to steal but that would affect the power supply to those buildings, thus putting off the lights if its done at night. Fishy deals!

  • Relating to the incidence of theft of EsiPay meters in Lae, an enquiry was made with Png power Sales office in town as to the replacement. The client was told that it will cost K1500.00 for the replacement. I am just thinking whether it is the price of the stolen meter that is being sold at black market price.

  • It cant be anyone else but the students themselves. Who would know the technical aspects of it to do it. Check the engineering students there. It cannot be anyone else beside the students themselves.
