EAST New Britain police have charged a man with stealing K340,000 under false pretences.
Terry Malaisa, from Movehave village in Malalaua, Gulf province was charged on Tuesday.
He is in police custody awaiting his court appearance.
East New Britain police commander Supt Sylvester Kalaut said Malaisa, between Nov 1, 2011, and Dec 30, 2011, allegedly obtained a letterhead from Kusip Lawyers and Associates and without their approval made an agreement with a contractor.
Malaisa allegedly told the contractor that he was a lawyer with the firm.
A sum of K170,000 was then paid to his personal account.
Police allege that defendant intended to defraud the law firm and the contractor.
They said Malaisa never informed them when he received the payment.
On another occasion, he allegedly assisted another man by using the law firm’s letterhead to get a certain payout from the Finance Department.
Police claim he was paid a commission of K170,000 for his assistance.
