East Sepik soon to supply market with eggs, chicken

EAST Sepik will soon supply the market with eggs from a poultry project in Yangoru-Saussia district, MP Richard Maru says.
Yesterday, the Sepik Agro Industry Centre Ltd (Sepik AIC) unveiled its product logo for its new chicken and egg products which will come under the ‘Sepik Fresh’ brand name.
Kumul Consolidated Holdings (KCH) managing director Isikeli Taureka yesterday launched the product’s logo and brand name ‘Sepik Fresh’.
The chicken products will come from its K35 million modern farm at Huaripmo, East Yangoru local level government.
Maru said the first chicken and eggs from the farm aimed to replace all the chicken and eggs that the Sepik provinces were importing from Morobe.
He reiterated that under the business mode, the company would only produce eggs and day-old chickens.
He said locals would raise broiler chickens and sell to the farm to be processed for marketing.
Maru presented a cheque for K470,000 to Ideal Hardware to supply the first 11 chicken sheds for pioneer chicken farmers.
He said the Yangoru-Saussia district development authority (YSDDA) has organised a credit scheme with the People’s Micro Bank to assist the farmers obtain loans to put up the chicken sheds.
“The first eggs from this project will be available in the market over the next week and the chicken after next year,” Maru said.
“The greatest beneficiaries of this project will be the chicken out-grower farmers who will now have a new income stream and consumers in chicken and eggs in the Sepik region who will now afford chicken products at reduced prices.
“The people are very excited about this project and thank the O’Neill-Abel Government for initiating the Sepik Plains Economic Zone project and providing the equity funding through the Kumul Consolidated Holding.”
