WEWAK General Hospital in East Sepik has received a special Easter gift from the management of the popular Sepik Ironman competition.

An electronic film processing machine for the X-ray department valued at K98,000 was delivered together with over a 100 hampers to cheer up patients at the adults’ and children’s wards and the babies’ nursery.

Sepik Ironman committee executive officer Gilbert Sari said the electronic film processor was purchased following a recommendation from the hospital, which had a small manual processor that took hours to process X-ray pictures.

“It is not the first time we have assisted the hospital, Sepik Ironman was the first to help when the hospital was affected by tsunami in 2010,” he said.

“We provided bed linens, relief food supplies and white goods when the hospital was hit. We also have plans to refurbish the old outpatient and do things to improve services at the hospital.”

Sari said since the inception of the annual competition in 2004, they had also donated water tanks, library books and sporting equipment to schools and were currently completing a library for Kreer Primary School near Boram.

He acknowledged the support of their sponsors – East Sepik provincial administration, Digicel, Coca Cola, South Seas Tuna, City Pharmacy Ltd and Garamut Enterprise.

Hospital board chairman Michael Mosoro thanked Sepik Ironman for their kind gesture.

“When the hospital is down, Sepik Ironman is there to assist as evident in the time we were hit by the tsunami,” he said.

“I would like to thank you for your continuous support since.”

Mosoro said Wewak hospital lacked proper medical equipment to perform effectively.

“That is the reason why people are complaining of indecent services provided by the hospital. The doctors and nurses would want to perform but they do not have to tools to do so,” he said.

East Sepik deputy governor Toby Samek and hospital chief executive Chris Kabaru were among the officials who witnessed the presentation.
