The Eastern Papua Carnival kicked off on a high note at Bisini Soccer Grounds on Saturday.
This year’s carnival has 32 men’s and 10 women’s teams, some of which travelled by sea to make the games.
Alotau-based teams such as Waterbase and Greenline Marinas travelled by boat to Port Moresby.
Samarai FC travelled by dinghy and Latama FC travelled by boat to Alotau then by plane to Port Moresby.
All the teams play a fast, attacking brand of football and sides based in Port Moresby should be wary of the threat, according to a statement from the carnival organisers.
Champions Maiyela FC face stiff competition from Latama FC, Keri FC, Oceaners, Simla and Samarai FC.
Samarai FC, Yalas and Gabutu have displayed impressive football in the early stages of the competition.
After the first day of competition, the pool leaders are Gabutu 1 (men’s pool A), Oceaners 1 (men’s pool B), Solgen FC (men’s pool C), Milne Bay Spirit (men’s pool D), Milne Bay Spirit (women’s pool A), Simla (women’s pool B).
