A 23-YEAR-OLD economist with the Department of Treasury was allegedly stabbed to death by his grade 11 girlfriend in his rented house in Waigani on Sunday.
Samuel Joseph Pumai, described by many as a young bright economics graduate with great potential for career success, was allegedly stabbed with a kitchen knife in a feud with his girlfriend of five months at 9pm.
Samuel, of mixed Western Highlands-Chimbu parentage, was employed about five months ago and is believed to be a member of the Treasury’s Budget 2020 team.
National Capital District (NCD) Met Supt Perou N’Dranou told The National that the murder was reported to the Boroko police station on Monday.
He appealed to the family of the schoolgirl to surrender the suspect to the police.
Supt N’Dranou said the murder suspect or suspects, who also lived in Waigani, would be arrested soon.
He said police were still investigating the cause and motive of the murder.
However, close friends of Samuel told The National that jealousy was likely the cause of the murder.
Samuel was rushed to the Gerehu Hospital by his twin brother, Emanuel, but he was pronounced dead on arrival. He was stabbed on the right side of his chest.
A weeping dad Joseph Pumai said: “We (family) are all shocked, my son was (allegedly) killed by his girlfriend. I told him to apply and study economics in the University of Papua New Guinea because I found him to be a good organiser and planner who can contribute positively to this country.
“Just five months after gaining employment, he had shown his supervisors his potential to do well for the future of the department.
“I did not know how he worked but his colleagues and supervisors told me at the haus krai that he was one of the best employees that they had recruited this year.
“I did not know that because I was at home but only learnt about it at the house cry.”
Pumai said he spent a lot of money on Samuel’s education and was looking forward to significant contributions from him “to my family and country”.
“Many friends including those abroad attended this young man’s house cry and this is testimony of his good character and potential for work and success,” he added.
Samuel had returned home from his first overseas assignment in Fiji on Sunday morning.
The girlfriend and at least two other women turned up at night and quarrelled with him.

  • Very very sad indeed. For what reason does he have to die. Get the culprit behind bars and send her to Tartaurus, the deep end of Hell. Get the three women charged for conspiring to take his life. No amount of compensation can undo this “nonsense”.

  • There are always sides to every story. Please find out the cause of this incident and bring judgement. However, the death is unacceptable.

  • Get the 3 woman involved to serve the rest of their lives behind bars, they don”t deserve to be in the community where good people live.

  • Very sad news. His soul may rest in peace. Now a days, jealous is one common character that lazy people always do in this nation we are living. Just think of this simple grade 11 girl murdered a person with a high standard of education even no way near to him. Also he is not her husband or even she is not working class woman. Get this idiot to lock her up in the bar for rest of her life and demand her family to responsible for the death. Very Sad may his soul rest in peace!!!!!

  • What a waste? A good human resource gone too soon. How stupid of her to do that. Responsible law agencies, please expedite the process and sentence her to jail with maximum penalty as soon as possible.

On the other end, it is a lesson for us to not let our emotions control us. Yes emotions may include jealously, fear, angry and the list goes on. Emotions in most times lead us to do things that we are not suppose to do. In this case, most likely the girlfriend was jealous and that drives her to be angry which eventually lead her to do what she did. Again this does not justify her actions. She deserve no freedom and should be put in jail quickly.

To the grieving family members, may you find peace in God in this tough time. To my late fellow elite country man, may your soul rest in peace.

  • Now we have an experience of ‘Violence against man’ situation from the Gr. 11 girl and her 3 agents. This ‘women or girl rights’ idea is making the general women population (not all) going crasy to do almost anything bad in the name of protecting their ‘rights’, thinking that they will be protected if any thing bad happens to them. This incident here is a classic example of how women (some) think when it comes to defending their ‘rights’ when in fact they are literally shortsighted to see how terrible their so called ‘rights’ is getting them into doing unexpected things like this murder. NGOs promoting gender equality and womens’ right needs to be partly blamed for igniting and adding fuel to our mothers and sisters to react to any relationship without thinking.

  • Why and Why taking someones life too early…..this is unfair for the parents who have spent alot of time, resources and money to bring this boy up to where he was. He was just starting a life and some evil selfish greedy persons comes along and cut it short. Really unfair….My heart goes with this young mans family for their lose. May our good Lord comfort you all during your time of grief.

  • It is very sad for the country like PNG to lose a young future economist who will save this country.
Have the jealous animals behind bars for the rest of their life because they deserve for their wrong doing.
May the Lord comfort you all during the time of grief.

  • So sad.
A big lose to his family and even bigger lose to our country.

The decisions we make defines our destiny.
LEARN FROM THIS ALL YOU EDUCATED YOUNG MEN OUT THERE.

  • Very sad and I think Papua New Guinea lost a young, up-coming and reliable leader. MAY YOUR SOUL REST IN PEACE and God’s Love and Peace be with your family in this time of sorrow.
Its a clear planned killing so get the girlfriend reveal every evil and let her be not the only one to face the consequences.

  • There are three Arms of a Government. Judiciary, Political and Executive. They all play a different Constitutional Role. Let no Political intervention in Executive Arm. Political is Passing Laws, Making sound Government Policies. It seems that Political is trying to interfere with the Executive Arm. Public servants are come from the Executive. Branch. Any Decisions concerning public servants must be through a Government Policy. One Branch cannot dictate. It is a path towards wrong direction, where Democracy will be questioned. Government of the day should not point fingers to the Executive Arm. Design and work on a political bird:s eye view of the Economy and strategically. Come up with global age political direction. The public service is a machinery here to stay. Political should stick to your Duty Statement and Guide the Economy with sound policies and passing relevant current appropriate Laws. The top Arm of the Executive should as much as possible judge according to their merits and not political interference. Over to Publice servants views. Educationist.
