Edevu hydro project queried

Letters

Can the management of PNG Hydro Development Ltd (PNGHDL) put out a media release or at least let the public know of the progress of the Edevu hydro power project in Central?
I understand that it is a public-private partnership (PPP) deal between PNG Power Ltd (PPL) and PNGHDL, so one of them should let us know what has become of this multi-million kina project. We know that the civil works has already started and is about to be completed. But the issue here is the obscurity surrounding the deal between PNG Power Ltd and PNGHDL.
The people who have been shortlisted to train in China under PNGHDL are concerned that the project may not continue because of a lack of funding and support from stakeholders of this project.
If my memory serves me right, there was an article published in The National early this year saying PNGHDL is waiting for a supporting letter from PPL to help it apply for a loan from the Exim Bank of China.
I understand that without this letter, the loan cannot be granted.
Many months have passed and I am not sure if PNG Power Ltd has released such a letter to PNGHDL. The public deserves to know and the deal should be made transparent.
I call upon the authorities to look into this matter of national interest. We can’t afford to delay such a project any longer and deny the city of Port Moresby access to alternative retailers of electricity.
