Educate people on their rights

Letters

EVERY time I read the newspaper, I read about young men being gunned down like animals during armed robberies, husbands beating their wives to death, men being slashed to death during land disputes and women tortured to death over sorcery accusations.
All these are happening despite our laws preventing people from committing such crimes.
What is happening to society?
Looking at these issues, I believe people still lack the knowledge on human rights.
Ever since we gained Independence in 1975, these issues have been topping the list of this country.
It is obvious people still lack the understanding of democracy and human rights.
People have to understand that we are a democratic country and one of the pillars of democracy is human rights, if I am correct.
We are a Christian nation and we stand against these barbaric acts.
These human rights issues are a blockage to the development of this nation.
Such issues attract criticisms from other nations that affect our country economically and socially.
That is why I believe people must understand and know their rights in order to avoid these issues.
We are not in the stone age anymore, we have developed through Christianity and I believe every individual is competent, however, they still lack the knowledge on their rights. I am calling on the United Nations and the Government to educate people on their rights.
