Education adviser warns corporal punishment illegal

EAST New Britain education adviser Hubert Wangun has warned parents to be wary of their children’s wellbeing as mistreating them is illegal.
He said child abuse such as corporal punishment was being reported in schools and homes. And the education division will be screening schools found to be practising those illegal activities.
He said torture applied by teachers to children had also been noticed.
Wangun said such cruel acts were foreign to Tolai society and should not be practised.
He appealed to teachers and parents to respect the rights of children and to provide financial support for their education. He also urged churches to be consistent in their religious programmes in schools, because grooming a child to become a faithful Christian would make a student a better person.
