EDUCATION must become a priority for all girls and women, says Rachael Marape, the wife of Prime Minister James Marape.
Rachael, who was in Hela last week, and spoke at the Hoiabia Secondary School’s launching of teachers houses, encouraged female students to plan out their education and not rush into marriage.
“Complete your education, have your own career and make your own mark,” she told the students.
Rachael told the students that she stood in front of them as the wife of the prime minister but that was not all she was.
“Before becoming a wife, I completed my studies, got my degree and had my own career in accounting.”
Rachael, who has been running financial literacy classes at the Hope College in Tari, Hela and helping women start up their own small businesses, said with her degree in accounting, she was able to help her husband bring in services for the people.
“One day you too can stand here as I am and speak to other young women, so do not rush into marriage, make education your priority, get your degree, earn your own money and enjoy your life first before you settle down,” she said.
Rachael also thanked all those who were present and witnessed the opening of the teachers’ houses, saying that teachers must be taken care of well as they are the ones who educate our children.
“I will continue to run the financial literacy classes at the Hope College,” she said.
“So do not be ashamed, come sign for classes.
“We, women, must empower each other and help each other.”
