MADANG education director Moses Sariki and Madang Soccer Association (MSA) revived the school soccer competition in Madang recently which included 14 teams from six urban primary schools.
During the launch of the competition at Laiwaden Oval in Madang, Sariki commended MSA for the initiative to bring back the competition for schools in Madang.
“While this initiative is commendable, I would like to see more sporting codes involved in this holiday period that all our students can be kept busy during the schools holidays playing sports,” Sariki said.
“When I was a student at the then Tusbab High School in the 1970s, we had the school sports carnival which was a good concept,” Sariki said. “We loved playing soccer because it was the main sport but over the years school soccer has not been maintained.
“Now that we have revived the competition, I want everyone including students and teachers to take ownership of the competition.
“I challenge the organisers to continue the initiative next year and include more schools and other sporting codes.
“Sports should be used as an opportunity to meet people from other schools, foster learning and exchange,” Sariki said.
Madang Soccer Association representative Siegfred Beschel thanked the provincial education board and schools that attended the launch.
