PASSAM landowners have been given K5 million in compensation from the Department of Education.
Education secretary Dr Musawe Sinebare presented the cheques to the landowners last month in the presence of the deputy secretary for teaching and learning Damien Rapese and Passam National High School principal Theresa Dingu.
Minister for Education Theo Zurenuoc last year directed that the K10 million appropriated in the 2011 budget for Passam National High School be paid out as follows:
lK5 million to Passam National High School for infrastructure rehabilitation;
lK3.6 million to the Warak Community Trust for outstanding land compensation; and
lK1.4 million to the Paliama community for environmental damage compensation.
The K10 million comes from the K40 million from the 2011 National Schools of Excellence budget for the improvement of and the upgrading of the school facilities for the four national high schools – Passam, Keravat, Aiyura and Sogeri.
Sinebare apologised for the delay when presenting the cheques.
“I call on the community to look after the school and its surroundings to ensure there are no more disruptions to classes,” he said.
Warak Incorporated Land Group deputy chairman John Sombuki thanked the department and assured everyone that Passam National High School was the pride of the community and they would look after the school and its property.
Dingu said they would use it to rebuild the school.
