THE National Executive Council has directed the Education Department to use the K500,000 allocated in the 2010 budget and from savings within the department to host the 2010 Forum Education Ministers’ meeting in Port Moresby.
Acting Prime Minister Don Polye  last week announced that cabinet had approved the regional education ministers’ conference report fromthe regions’  meeting that was held last year in Tonga.
He said the conference held in Tonga was vital to consider issues related to the review of the implementation and enhancement of the forum basic education action plan (FBEAP) and to deliberate on the theme of the meeting which was  “partnership in education”.
“The cabinet also approved that an inter-governmental technical working committee will be established to plan and implement the staging of the 2010 conference.
“This committee will comprise of officers from the Education Department, Foreign Affairs, Treasury and the National Events Council,” he said.
Polye also said cabinet had also endorsed a K20 million funding proposal to be used for the  scoping and design work at the Angau Memorial General Hospital in Morobe.
“Cabinet directed the Treasury Department to allocate the funding in the 2010 supplementary budget to the Health Department (DOH) for work on the Angau hospital,” Polye said.
He said NEC had also directed the Health Department to tender the architectural and engineering component of the Angau Memorial Hospital project after the completion of the scoping and design work.
He said the department would also be initiating similar projects to improve the infrastructure at the Port Moresby, Mt Hagen and Nonga Base hospitals as they were considered as regional hospitals.
“The scoping and designing project on the Angau Memorial Hospital will be of great benefit to both the people of Morobe and the Highlands region,” he said.
