Education’s perilous path

Letters

AS a student from the Highlands region, it is a challenge to bring this subject to the attention of the authorities in the country.
This case has been presented by students who have graduated from University of Technology and Divine Word University.
I don’t know if it has been taken into consideration or not by the statutory bodies.
I’ve been travelling along the Highlands Highway since my selection into Divine Word University.
As a poor Highlander, I have witnessed so many hold-ups and robberies along the road and the fact is that I am one of the victims of this insane act of a handful of robbers.
We’ve lost our laptops, phones, shoes and suitcases – to name a few. We sometimes get hurt and in some cases we have come close to being killed.
Sometimes accidents take place and many lose their lives.
Provinces which are too far from the two coast universities are Enga, Hela and Southern Highlands.
Students from Southern Highlands and Hela travel from Mendi via Port Moresby to Madang and Lae.
But for us Engans, we have to take a bus from Enga and travel via Mt Hagen then on to Lae or Madang, spending the night on the road. As the future of this nation lies in the young people who are now struggling through the journey of education, our welfare is important.
Robbing us of our expensive luggage and educational properties puts a heavy burden on our parents.
I am asking the authorities to please do something so that we can be safe on the road.
I am making this appeal especially to the six MPs from Enga.
