EASTERN Highlands Governor Peter Numu presented a cheque for K100,000 to China to help combat coronavirus (Covid-19) in a small ceremony at the Chinese embassy in Port Moresby yesterday.
Numu told the Chinese ambassador Xue Bing, who received the cheque, that the donation was from the government and people of Eastern Highlands.
“We would like to pass our heartfelt condolences to the people of China who have lost their family members as a result of the coronavirus,” he said.
“We are concerned about the issue that is affecting our friends in China.
He said PNG had a long, cordial relationship with China and for Eastern Highlands, “we have a history with China which dates back 20 years with the Fujian province with regards to the Juncao Technology”.
Numu said they also established a relationship with the Yunnan province and the relationships with China had helped the people of his province.
“So at such time when China is going through a lot, we are here as friends to show our support and care,” Numu said.
He said some people would say China was a big country with a big population and the amount of our cheque presentation may seem small, “but it’s not about the money.
“It is about sharing and caring in such tough times.
Ambassador Bing thanked Numu for the good gesture and for being the first Governor come forward to support.
He said the money itself did not matter but it was the support and solidarity in such times that mattered the most.

  • The people of eastern highlands must be very well off now that they can donate such huge sums of money to China. Wow! Thumps up Governor. Well done…

  • I think this donation sounds funny at all. The treats of Coronavirus is now spread out in other parts of the world and soon it will arrive in your home. This kind of amount should be kept for other purposes. What if Coronavirus hit in EHP, where do you can fund to prevent your people? Giving donation to Australia Bush Fire already and then to China. Then get ready to give donations to other countries as well.

My goodness, sounds funny at all.
