Provincial games, tournaments deferred due to Covid-19 surge

ALL sporting activities in Eastern Highlands will remain on hold until the end of this year, says provincial sports coordination Leroy Kume.
He told The National last week that the provincial games and a rugby league nines tournament had been deferred with approval for both events to be determined by December.
Kume said the surge in Coronavirus (Covid-19) cases in the province had prompted the deferral of all business and sporting activities with the province on a two-week lockdown.
“Provincial games and other major tournaments have been put on hold until the end of this year,” he said.
“The provincial games were supposed to be held in the middle of the year, but we had to move them to December. We’ve been in touch with all eight districts in the province and they have teams that have been preparing since June.
He said they had instructed all the teams to defer training for the meantime while we wait and review the situation at the end of this year.
“Through the provincial government, we were able to cater for 16 sports for the PNG Games in Mendi (Southern Highlands),” he said.
Kume said Goroka was scheduled to hold the rugby league tournament at the end of the year, however, it was now on hold with organisers to liaise with the provincial authorities to determine a new date.
