ELECTING a leader who is in tune with the current economic, political and social developments in Bougainville is crucial for South Bougainville, Joseph Kinani, chairman of Lenoke Constituency says.
Kinani said even though there was limited time left before next year’s general election, the new South Bougainville MP should be someone who could complement the good working relationship that existed between the PNG Government and the Autonomous   Bougainville Government.
He said the new leader should also be a person who could support efforts made by the two governments in preparation for the Bougainville referendum in 2019.
Kinani said the leader should also be a person who could work closely with the council of elders in each constituency so that services were delivered to the people.
“Therefore electing a leader who has good relationship with people at all levels is important,” he said.
Nominations for the South Bougainville by-election closed last Thursday and the candidates will have two weeks to campaign before polling starts on June 18 and ends on July 1. Writs are expected by July 22.
Finance Department released K2.5 million for the by-election.
