Election expected to be costly

Letters

WITH the trial separate polling booth for men and women, tried this year in Goroka by-election, the cost to run for election in 2022 will be high.
During the “first past the post” voting system, men as a head of family, tribe, village and community meet to choose the suitable candidate to come talk in the community.
Later the men decide who to cast votes too.
The election cost was low.
With the introduction of limited preferential voting system, the election cost tripled.
Voters, especially men, young and old, visit candidates with problems or situation in the hope to get assisted.
After visiting candidates, they select the top three who gave them more support and vote for them despite party policies or the leadership style.
If an intending candidate wants to be in the three preferences than he/she would spend more money from the open of writs to end of polling.
The recent Goroka by-election created a separate polling place for women to vote for trial and error.
The election cost was more then tripled.
Before we had men going around seeing candidates but now we have females going around too seeking assistance from candidates.

Mono tins,
Goroka
