Electrician Kila Lua takes time to start again

Youth & Careers

AFTER spending 20 years fixing watches, electrician Kila Lua resigned last February to start a small business.
These days you will find him at Boroko, in Port Moresby, fixing watches.
“An Englishman taught me how to fix watches in 1977,” Lua, from Central, said.
“He went back to England and I started working with Kara Jewellers in Port Moresby.” While working there, he started a small business on the side fixing watches.
He left Kara Jewellers and joined Chin H Min (CHM) in 1982.
He left, went to the village and returned to work for CHM again in 1997, this time as a fulltime employee.
His job was mainly to repair watches.
Today, Lua repairs watches and fits watchbands and batteries.
The ’90s and early 2000s were his best years but technology has taken its toll on his business.
“Many young people today don’t own watches as they use mobile phone to read time, so I deal with adults who prefer watches,” he said.
“Even though adults have mobiles, they like to wear watches because it is jewellery.”
