STUDENTS and teachers of St Anne Elementary School in Gerehu, Port Moresby, celebrated the World
Environment Day yesterday.
Under the theme “Go Green for Life”, pupils brought pot plants and displayed them, drew pictures accompanied by short messages supporting the occasion.
Head teacher Sr Alice Lonappan told The National:
“We want to teach the children to appreciate God for the gifts of nature and protect the environment around them.
“They should not pollute the environment by cutting trees, burning bushes and other activities which lead to natural calamities like tsunamis.”
Lonappan said they had to be taught in school so they would practice it in their homes and the communities they lived in.
She said children were encouraged to pick up rubbish whenever they saw any and dispose of it in the right place.
Lonappan thanked parents for their support.
World Environment Day is observed every year on June 5 to raise global awareness to take positive environmental action to protect nature and the planet Earth. It is run by the United Nations Environment Programme.
Other schools and organisations nationwide also commorated this important day.
