THE Pacific MMI Port Moresby Canoe Sailing Association (POMCSA) round 12, sponsored by Tent Manufacturers Ltd, attracted 10 canoes that participated in a 14 course race at Ela Beach last Saturday in moderate windy conditions.
Tent Manufacturers owner, John Vada sponsored the race with K3,000 in prizes and cash.
The canoes that participated were NICKTA Marshall Islands, Emborah, PMMI WallyHits, Hebou Construction Kwariwai, Citifone Somanada, Vorewai, Morgerea, Melona, Kaloa Ai and Keeperwin.
Emborah blitzed the field and raced away the winner with skipper, Kilakwaea and crew, Noah Au skillfully guiding Emborah to its fifth (5th) win of the season.
The consistent NICTA Marshall Island started off well in the early stages of the race but capsized and encountered some problems finishing off behind the Poka Irau owned Vorewai (3rd), and newly-built canoe, Keeperwin (2nd), owned by Iga Iga.
Debutant Keeperwin was skippered by the master and experienced sailor, Stanley Muksy Mula, who sailed well throughout the race finishing second behind Emborah.
Inform Marogerea did not live up to expectations as it had to retire in the early stages of the course with its damaged mast followed by PMMI WallyHits who had earlier capsized and took in water in its outrigger.
Citifone Somanada who won the Porebada Association Open Race last week at Porebada village could not repeat its form at Ela Beach.
The final results of the race; Emborah, Keeperwin, Vorewai, NICKTA Marshall Islands, Melona, Kalo Ai, Citifone Somanada and Hebou Construction Kwariwai.
Since the association started the competition in early May it is proving successful under the leadership of president Dean Ani.
There are a couple of new moulded fibered canoes built in Lele and Keeperwin. Currently, there are now 25 registered ‘A’ grade and four ‘B’ grade canoes.
The B grade canoes are Dark Tan, Marokele, One Piece and Nawalekele.
Ani thanked Pacific MMI Insurance for its continuous support of its three-year sponsorship and the minor sponsors who have been sponsoring the various race rounds of the competition: Curtain Brothers, The Net Shop, Oil Search, Citifone and Tent Manufacturers.
