Emergency sittings held to clear crowded cell

YANGORU District Court in East Sepik is having emergency sittings to clear out overcrowded cell since the start of special police operations in the province, says police commander Robert Gesa.
He said yesterday they had set up these emergency hearings because the cell now had more than 20 detainees.
“We can’t keep them that long in the small cell because it is a breach of human rights,” Gesa said.
“That cell can only cater for less than 20 detainees at any one time.
“The Yangoru police station is overcrowded with suspects arrested and detained for consumption of drugs and homebrew alcohol, being in possession of offensive weapons, and causing social problems under the influence of drugs and homebrew.
“The Lae-based mobile squad, since their arrival, have been helping local police enforce law and order in the Yangoru-Saucia electorate.”
Meanwhile, police arrested six suspects at Hanyak village for allegedly planning to rob a gold buyer of his 8kg gold last week.
“They were pretending to provide security escort for him while planning to rob him at an isolated spot along the Sepik Highway,” Gesa said.
“We intercepted the vehicle at Hanyak that they were all travelling in.
“We then questioned the passengers and suspected that they were planning to rob the gold buyer.
“We arrested the suspects and confiscated their firearm.
“We then took the gold buyer and hid him in a safe house in Wewak,” Gesa said.
“The suspects are being detained at the Yangoru cell.”
Gesa said they also uprooted a marijuana plantation at Kumun village and confiscated homebrew-making equipment and a homemade gun.
“We also contained a fight between Nangumarum and Nimiendohun villagers,” he said.
