MINISTER for Forests Douglas Tomuriesa was emotional after seeing a Milne Bay war canoe on display at the Vision City mall in Port Moresby.

Tomuriesa said he was not expecting the canoe in the mall.

He thought it would be placed outside.

The war canoe can carry about 40 men.

Tomuriesa explained that the name written on the canoe “Kugege”was a custodian of the Wagawaga people, from where the canoe originated.

“They believe it is a big serpent,” Tomuriesa said.

“They believe that when people go to the area where Kugege is, they cannot speak in any other language other than the local language.

“If another language is spoken, thunder, lightning and rain will just come down.”
