TEACHERS from St Therese Primary School were in tears when their students presented poems, gift cards and food during the World Teachers’ Day celebration in Port Moresby recently.
School head teacher Patricia Avire said every year they observed the day with different activities, but this year it was tough with the Coronavirus (Covid-19) impacting the country.
Avire said teachers were touched that their students were still able to present them with gifts.
“I’m really touched, especially to those students whose parents were struggling but were still able to make an effort to bring a gift for us,” she said.
Avire said teachers were the students’ second parents because of the time they spent in school under their care and supervision.
“We are like their second parents, if they are sad, we are sad, when they are happy, we are happy and they are very close to us,” she said.
Avire said for this year’s celebration, students presented teachers with gift cards, food, dances and poems.
She said the day was celebrated on Thursday.
Avire said the school had a total of 1,300 students with 28 teaching staff.
