THE total level of employment in the formal private sector increased by 0.4 per cent in the second quarter of 2019 (April-June), compared to an increase of two per cent to the first quarter.
According to the Bank of Papua New Guinea’s (BPNG) June Quarterly Economic Bulletin, excluding the mineral sector, the level of employment also increased by 0.4 per cent.
By sector, the index showed that the level of employment increased in the retail, transportation, wholesale, mineral and the financial, business and other services sectors, while it declined in construction, agriculture, forestry, fishing and manufacturing.
By region, the level of employment increased in NCD, Highlands and Morobe while it fell in the Islands, Mamose and Southern.
