ENB villagers warn of sorcery killings
The National – Tuesday, March 15, 2011
SORCERY seems to be a growing scare.
As a national symposium met in Port Moresby to discuss the issue last week, villagers in many parts of Kokopo and East New Britain are living in fear of it.
Villagers, who refused to be named, claimed that young apprentice sorcerers were killing at random causing people to fear for their lives.
There were several deaths in certain villages last month which people believed were sorcery-related saying home was not safe anymore.
They warned other villagers to be extra careful when receiving gifts, especially betelnuts, from friends and families saying that betelnuts were commonly used by sorcerers to lure their victims.
Locals living in a village in the Central Gazelle area also expressed their fears as a result of the brutal death of a worker in the Simberi gold mine two weeks ago.
Police visited the murder site yesterday to collect evidence and start their investigations.
