POLICE have arrested a married couple in East New Britain for cultivating marijuana.

Provincial police commander Supt Anthony Wagambie Jnr said members of the Rabaul-based Quick Response Unit raided Raluana No 3 in the Gazelle district and found a large quantity of marijuana.

The officers also found a home-made firearm at the home of the married couple.

“Both husband and wife, aged 27 and 25, have been arrested for cultivating marijuana and for having in their possession a home-made shotgun,” Wagambie  said.

He said matured marijuana plants were discovered in the yard of another home.

The owner of that home has also been arrested.

“It is becoming a worrying trend that some individuals are now cultivating marijuana in the province,” Wagambie said.

Police will continue to work closely with community leaders to clamp down on dangerous drugs.

He said it was sad that married couples were involved, “making it a family affair to cultivate and sell drugs”.
