EAST New Britain now has more teachers than it needs and at least 500 of them are without jobs, provincial appointment officer Wilson Kairat says.
He said those lucky enough to have a job should make use of the opportunity.
Kairat said statistics showed that there were more than 500 teachers, including new graduates, teachers released from other provinces and displaced teachers from within the province without a teaching position.
“There are about 80 to 90 displaced teachers within the province adding to the number of teachers currently without positions,” Kairat said.
He said the appointment committee gave priority to displaced teachers and managed to find some of them positions but most remained without a job.
“The committee has not entertained those teachers on release and new graduates, but some districts have managed to utilise some new graduates,” Kairat said.
He said it was big challenge to find the unemployed teaching positions and part of the blame for the problem was directed at parents who were reluctant to send their children away from home.
“Many parents are holding back their children in the province, contributing to the influx of teachers,” Kairat said.
“There are not enough positions to place them all and I appeal to parents to let their children go out into the country and serve the community with commitment.”
He said the country needed teachers.
“Teachers must take up their first-up positions.
“If they have problems with the posting, start work and then you can appeal to the appointment committee under the PEB and give reasons why you do not want to teach at that position.”
