ENB return to netball after two-year absence
EAST New Britain are making a comeback after a two-year absence from the Newcrest National Netball Championships.
Under the leadership of new president Saradha Wong, there is renewed energy and excitement in the sport which has had a good season with potential to expand from next year.
ENB held its grand finals recently with a squad undergoing training led by Joyce Varuna, Vorina Kerina and Annie Bunziie.
“After a two-year absence, Team ENB are excited and looking forward to this event to showcase their skills and talent,” Wong said.
“Our young ladies are the future of netball in East New Britain and at these championships, I’d like them to gain experience from playing at the national level.”
Wong said their main focus was on the Under-21s.
“Our key players include shooters Jacqueline Kerina, Marjella Kakabin, Natasha Mato, Skye and Lousia Butler,” she said.
“In the mid-court, we have Joanne Butler and Daisy Adula to keep an eye on.
“The defenders to watch are Freda Mato, Renae Ofae and Valerie.”
Being the furthest association geographically, it is quite expensive for a small association to sent a team at a national competition.
“But we are determined to send our players to play some competitive netball and have a crack at the selection trials, particularly in the U21s,” Wong said.
She said despite not securing a major sponsor for the season, the association had raised money to help send the team over to Goroka, Eastern Highlands, for the national netball selections trial.
Wong said their participation would be first time after two years absent.
